More Tips for College Freshmen– July 8 at 2:40 PM

college tips sectionSince everyone liked my other college tips for freshmen. I thought I’d post more for today’s writing challenge.

General Things You Should Know
Dorm Showers Are Disgusting–There is really no way around the fact that you are sharing your restroom with 15 to 20 separate people. Some of whom like to roll around in dirt before taking a shower, others who like to shave their back hair and leave the hair in the drain, and some who don’t know the difference between a shower and a public restroom.

  • Tip 1) the MOST OBVIOUS tip is WEAR SHOWER SHOES. Its just disgusting if you don’t.
  • Tip 2) Never take the first or the last shower, the first and last ones always work the worst, and they are used the most. Middle shower doesn’t have the weird plumbing problems and it probably clogs the least.
  • Tip 3) Don’t use bar soap. You know how people say to prisoners “don’t drop the soap”. Well, you probably won’t be raped in a dorm shower, but if you drop your bar soap in a dorm shower you are picking up SOOOO many germs.
  • Tip 4) For the Girls, use Veet to shave because its just easier to maneuver without your back touching the shower.
  • Tip 5) Find out when the people who clean the showers clean your shower, and shower right after they’ve cleaned it.
  • Tip 6) Never shower in the early morning–because you’re probably in the most DISGUSTING showers after everyone has already showered.

Everything You Move Inside of Your Dorm You Will Have to Move Out (Plus Extra Stuff you Accumulated During the School Year)–Chances are you will forget this rule, and by the time you move out you’ll think something along the lines of ‘I should have listened to that blogging chick.’If you think you have too much stuff when you’re moving in chances are in a year your stuff will double and moving out will be nearly impossible.

Your Professors will tell you that you write terribly. Don’t Get Offended Get Better.–I’m not , naturally, the world’s best writer as you can tell by the fact I don’t proof read my blog. When I was a freshmen the biggest complaint I heard was the English teachers did not like freshmen technical writing. Chances are you will not be the best writer when you get to college, but in your Intro English classes you will improve and you will get better. The best advice I can give you is if you have writing problems talk to your professors, they’ll give you advice and help you improve. Don’t just talk to them though…really listen and try to improve.

Write about What You Know. –Do not try to sound smarter than you really are. I swear this little rule will help you the rest of your life. When I say do not try to sound smarter than you are I mean you can replace the words that are too elementary with better stated words (e.g you can replace simple words like alot with many), but do not try to replace every word you’d normally use with complicated words to impress your professor. The best way for any college paper is clear and concise. If you can’t understand what you’re writing about, why do you think the professors can? Some of the world’s best writing is lost with too many complicated phrases and words. When writing you can never forget your first goal is to be understood, and your next goal is not to be too wordy.

Anyways, these are my tips, and blog entry for today. Check out Taylor’s Blog for her writing challenge entry. Come back tomorrow for another entry.
