Starting My Life

My mom told me she got married at 21 years old, and I thought to myself that is only a year older than I am now. I never realized how young 21 years old was until I turned 20, and I can’t believe my mom got married so young. For some reason, I can not imagine people my age beginning their lives, you know, settling down. Marriage just seems like such a grown-up think to do, it doesn’t matter if I can legally sign my own forms, own a credit card, or buy a pack of smokes, I still feel just like a little kid. I still feel like I’m 13.

Even when I worked the 8 hour day I felt like a little kid. I wonder if as you get older the “kid” feeling goes away and you feel like an adult? Hmm…I wonder when I’ll get my life started, you know, stereotypical American dream—own a husband, a kid, and a suburban. Life seems so spelled out, and I don’t think the “American dream” archetype fits me. I wonder if it ever will, or I’ll be destined to be the eccentric crazy aunt who travels to Paris, meets hot boyfriend after boyfriend, and never marries. The eccentric aunt never seemed so appealing until my mom told me she got married at 21. I bet I’d be an awesome eccentric aunt. I digress, I don’t know when I’ll feel like an adult, when I’ll start my life officially, and I guess that’s ok for now.
