I’ve noticed, looking at my blog stats (you know one of my favorite hobbies) there are a lot of pre-med freshmen looking for advice about college. Naturally, I should have surmised out of all the majors pre-med students would be the most concerned and diligent about finding advice about the cut-throat field they are entering. My qualifications to give advice to pre-med freshmen is that I’ve been a pre-med freshmen, and technically (through being too lazy to drop pre-med) i’m still a pre-med student. Without much further ado here are my tips:

You’re not going to like what I’m about to say, and probably think that this doesn’t apply to you, seeing as you’re a freshman, and not a shiny unique pinnacle pre-med student of the earth this DEFINITELY APPLIES TO YOU.

Pre-Med Should be Renamed Two Steps Away From Undecided– Everyone knows most people who start out as pre-med do not stay pre-med. The first mistake everyone has made is they declare themselves pre-med, and the second mistake is most people aren’t pre-med because they like doctoring or science. Everyone says they WANT to be a doctor, but what are your motivating factors? Would you’re family be pissed if you weren’t a doctor? Did you not want to declare yourself as undecided? You need to really consider if being a doctor is the only thing you want to do with your life, you couldn’t think of anything else, or if you’re even good at science. The stress of pre-med is too great (and too much of a GPA killer) to be pre-med if you’re not good at it, or not passionate.

Now chances are if you’re a freshmen you think I’m an idiot, and you’re just going to say you feel passionate about it, but if you’re most pre-med freshmen you’ll find yourself pondering this question after a few semesters of STRESS.

Saying You’re a Pre-Med Freshmen is not as Impressive as you think, So Don’t Sneer at Upper Classmen who are other majors and We Won’t Sneer at You—

There may come a time when you think upper classmen hate you for no reason. Of course, there is nothing noticeable a turn off about your personality, but there is. If you notice a lot of people sneering at you then you may be saying “I’m Joe Doctor…I’m a pre-med freshman….What’s your major?” The upperclassman may answer something along the lines of sociology, English, or art and then you sneer as if we don’t study as hard as you do. Remember people in other majors work just as hard as you do, so don’t be pretentious because of your major.

STUDY.STUDY.STUDY—Duh!!! You’re in college, and you MUST study for any major. You need to work on your studying skills before you leave to college. You need to learn what is the most effective way to retain the information. Do the suggested practice problems and read your text daily. Yes, you can go have fun, but don’t forget that studying is a MANDATORY.

Sometimes You JUST can’t do it—

Me: Dude look at that 9 on this scantron….Taylor, I only missed 9 out of 100 on this test!!!! I’m brilliant

Taylor: Dar you know 9 is the amount of questions you got right .

I learned that sometimes not everyone has the aptitude for being pre-med, and the stress of making good grades in hard classes can be too much. You have to remember that YOU ARE NOT YOUR GRADES, YOU’RE GRADES ARE ONLY A REFLECTION OF YOUR PERFORMANCE (commit that to your memory). When you notice that you’re failing your tests you need to get as much help as you can VERY EARLY ON, in the class, and after you’ve gotten as much help as you can if you are still failing then you need to drop the class before it kills your GPA. If you’re STILL not doing well as a pre-med student then you might want to consider changing your major before its too late.

Just Because You Are Pre-med Doesn’t Mean You Are A Doctor—You don’t really know how to save people’s lives just yet, don’t try to do surgery in your room, just go to a doctor.

Study Some More—Find your quiet spot in the library very early. Do not study in your room (it will become distracting)

Buy the Books Don’t Share Taylor’s—Yeah, I had to borrow Taylor’s Chemistry book and share it with 3 other people freshmen year. I think buying the book would have been more useful. Since, I got a D I had to buy the book anyways.

Find A Good Study Buddy (Preferably someone smarter than you)—You’re study buddy can not be your distracting best friend. Someone from the class who is DILLIGENT about studying, and will hold you accountable.

Pay Attention to Lecture—One time while I was retaking freshmen chemistry a girl fell asleep while highlighting the pages in her book. Class can be very lulling so DO NOT EAT BEFORE GOING TO A BORING LECTURE! Find someone you can share notes with. TAKE A SHORT CAT NAP BEFORE GOING TO LECTURE!

Can I get yaa Numba???????—Get the phone number of at least one person in at least each of your classes. (This goes for you even if you’re not pre-med). Then you can form a study group and study for tests, and have someone to get notes from if you need them.

YOU NEED ADDITIONAL HELP—Use all available resources, even if you feel like you don’t need them. (Tutoring, Supplemental Instruction, End of Chapter Questions, Suggested Practice Problems, e.g)

Be-Friend an Upperclassman who saves there Notes—They may lend the notes to class you’re taking. They may have old tests. Old notes are awesome resources. If you can get some you’ve hit GOLD!!! If you’re a Baylor University freshmen interested in some notes, or what not just leave a comment. (Maybe I’ll find an upperclassmen who will score you some)

So those are my tips. If you want to add some from personal experience just comment….Thanks for reading.

Sorry, I didn’t proof this, but I will proof later.

  1. It is luck that I ended up reading your blog because this fall I am going to Baylor and going to choose Pre-med as my major.

Thanks for the tips and hopefully, if I have a need for them, I could borrow some notes.

I am pretty nervous and excited to go to Baylor.

How is it? The professors, students, atmosphere?

    • Sorry it took so long to respond. Most unfortunately, I’ve been buried under a mountainous pile of homework. Why do teachers want me to learn?

Thanks sooo much for reading my blog. You can definitely borrow some notes home slice. Honestly, like most schools, the first few classes are weed outs. So, if you survive the weed outs it will get easier. The professors are usually knowledgeable and exceptionally friendly. You can look at reviews for your professors (this will save your life for the next 4 years) on bubooks.com .
